Written for a client who owns one of top UPS Stores in the US. He asked me to write this to announce his recognition as one of the area's top small businesses.
A couple of weekends ago our store was highlighted and awarded the 25 Under 25 Award, fromThinking Bigger Business Media, Inc,recognizing us as one of the top 25 small businesses in Kansas City. This award brings entrepreneurship to the forefront and recognizes those individuals who have accomplished the American dream of owning their own business.
This spirit is alive more than ever and made me realize how important small businesses are to our economy. Every day we compete with the mega stores who pay a fraction of what we do for products and raw materials and have seemingly unlimited advertising budgets. Some even pay less in taxes than we do. Yet every day we open our doors, work harder to win that new account and provide a level of service far and above what the nationals can do. We do all of this and then hope that somewhere out there is a client willing to buy our products or services.

The modern marketplace has a huge mix of commerce and there is a place for the big box store. They may have a greater selection of items or offer more locations. But what they offer in numbers they often lack in service. On a recent visit to a large office supply box store that advertised printing services, I asked a few questions about their “guaranteed” same day service. No one seemed to have any information although their name tags called them Specialists. I was finally informed that the only thing they could guarantee was what they did within the store, which was, for the most part, making copies.
The American dream is very much alive and we see lots of opportunity out there. There are some great ideas and some not so great, but even failure offers a chance to learn. Driven by a new creativity, entrepreneurship is thriving. Everyday we thank our customers for their loyalty, and their business. Some we even thank for their friendship. And we never take it for granted. They’ve put their confidence in us and we will never let them down.
